Amber Scenery

By Lady Harken

He was so going to hear about this to no end. Soushi hurried his steps through the Alvis corridor and made it to the exit he was looking for. He recognized the fact that he had agreed to this socializing at the beach thing and had promised he'd at least stop by - but that was before today's research simulation had turned out to take several hours longer than expected. All right, maybe he had forgotten it too, until around lunch when Kenji had called him just to remind him of it, and then things had just gotten busy and here he was, late.

Later than he had though, he realized as he stepped outside. The sky didn't look so bright anymore; rather, it was picking a yellowish hue, and Soushi stopped to look at it for a moment. He was really late, and with his luck everyone was gone already. It didn't hurt to check, he figured as he continued along the road. If he found nobody over at the beach, walking over there and back counted as exercise, and he hadn't really moved much today.

The sky turned orange as he made it to the beach, finding it about as empty as he had expected, and he was about to turn back when he noticed someone sitting there alone. "Kazuki?" He questioned, recognizing his boyfriend's silhouette. "I thought you would've left by now."

"Left?" Kazuki turned to look over his shoulder and smiled. "I, uhh." He chuckled then lowered his head in defeat. "I got stuck helping Mr. Mizoguchi with deliveries and then we had a minor emergency in the kitchen and I had to clean up afterwards and..." He trailed off and looked at Soushi, who walked over and sat down next to Kazuki. "Let's just say I only got here ten minutes ago. Nobody was here, but I thought I'd at least enjoy the sunset, since I walked all the way here."

Soushi looked at the orange-colored sky. "Might just as well," he agreed. "I..." Kazuki was giving him that look already, and Soushi sighed. "All right, I got too distracted by my work and then it was suddenly really late." Judging from the expression on Kazuki's face, it was exactly the explanation he had been expecting. "If this is going to lead to one of your 'you work too much' speeches, save it for later."

"All right, fine," Kazuki replied with a smile. "We were both late because of working too much, so not like I'm any better. We've got to apologize to the others and try again later on a better day. And maybe take the day off beforehand so we don't work too late."

The sky was turning into a deeper hue of orange as they sat there, and Soushi relaxed a little. "Well. This isn't so bad in the end," he mused. Kazuki nodded then flopped to lie down with his arms behind is neck and watched the sky slowly take a red shade. "I'd say walking to all the way here was worth it, after all," Soushi continued, looking up as the sky as well.

"It's nice to relax after work," Kazuki agreed after a moment. "I do wish we could've made it here before and could've hung out with the others, but it can't be helped now."

"Hmm. I don't know," Soushi said as he turned to look at him with a hint of a smirk. "I think I might prefer this," he added, leaning a little closer. "Now it's just the two of us here enjoying the sunset."

Kazuki stared at him, looking puzzled for a second, but then he laughed. "That's... Not something I'd expect you to say," he pondered with a bright smile. "You're not really the type to get romantic."

Soushi leaned down and pressed a kiss on Kazuki's lips. "I didn't say anything about being romantic," he whispered between kisses. "I said it's only the two of us here." He shifted to lie down half on top of Kazuki and ran his fingers through his partner's hair, deepening the kiss to silence the inevitable protest about the location Kazuki would attempt to make.

The sky turned deeper red then dark, but they weren't paying attention anymore.
