Games

By Lady Harken

The weaker the daylight got the more bored and anxious Yuber became, and Albert Silverberg couldn't help but to notice this fact as he sat at his desk and studying the Grasslands maps in preparation for the upcoming battles. The blond demon was either sitting by the desk, tapping it with his fingers, or he was pacing around. Either were clear enough signs of boredom, but after the demon teleported away for the third time tonight, Albert hoped he had finally figured something to do on his own and would give him a moment free of distractions.

He was given no such luck tonight. The sun had vanished from the sky and a soldier had brought him another lamp. Only a few minutes passed before Yuber returned. The demon, still appearing bored, studied one of his blades before putting it away and sitting down again and returning to tapping the desktop.

"There's just nothing to do here," he complained, a complaint Albert which had heard repeatedly today. "I went to kill a few monsters, but those things failed to serve as any entertainment." Yuber leaned closer and stared at the red-haired strategist, a strange gleam in his eyes that Albert didn't particularly like, but one he ignored as easily as ever.

"Perhaps you should look for stronger monsters," the strategist replied with an impassive voice. He raised his face from the maps and stared back at the blond, a thoughtful look in his eyes. "I imagine the ones on the plains aren't capable of giving you any trouble, but you could check the mountains."

Yuber frowned and leaned back in his chair. "Went there already, Silverberg. Is that the best you can come up with? And here I thought your mind would come up with something more interesting for entertainment than that. Bah. When's the next battle?"

The strategist shook his head, well aware that his answer would not be a satisfactory one. "Not tonight," he said. "But seeing you're frustrated to the point of considering killing our own men again, I suppose I'll have to leave my tactical plans for later and volunteer for entertaining you. Do you play chess?"

This earned an amused chuckle from the demon. "Chess? What do you think I am, Silverberg? Isn't that the stupid slow game where you move pieces on the board and..." He studied the red-haired man for second then shrugged. "Fine, it's got to be more interesting than sitting here and waiting to get permission to attack something. You'll have to teach me though."

"That's fine by me," Albert replied as he stood. He crossed the tent to a small table with a chessboard on it. Yuber watched for a moment then followed the redhead, taking a seat at the table. The game didn't interest him at all, but since he had already agreed, he decided he could just as well go through with it.

Albert soon found that teaching a demon to play chess took effort. The blond demon of course lacked patience, and the strategist concluded that he was more interested in poking the pieces than actually trying to learn to play. It wasn't much of a game, but Albert continued his attempt to teach the demon anyway. Whatever Yuber was planning and as much patience as he didn't have, he was about to be reminded that the red-haired strategist did, in fact, have an endless amount of it.

"This sucks," the demon complained. "Strategy games would be more of your thing anyway. Why can't I just move every piece straight from there and-"

"Because that defeats the purpose of the game," Albert cut in with his usual indifferent tone of voice. "If you're trying to play, you need to..."

Yuber stood all of a sudden and grinned, pushing the table over. The chess pieces scattered on the floor, and Albert frowned a little. As usual, the blond had run out of patience.

"I have a better game in mind," the demon said and stood, circling around the strategist's chair. "Care to try?"

Albert sighed in his mind, knowing quite well what Yuber's 'games' were about. He settled to nodding and standing. The game would keep the demon occupied for the night, at least.

END.
