Crisis

By Lady Harken

It was either comical or just plain tragic, Sigurd couldn't really decide which while he was watching Hervey trying to deal with the young army leader sometimes. The pirate was too blunt and hotblooded, and their leader on the other hand was a lot more reserved and wasn't all that comfortable letting someone too close to him all the time. Sigurd could understand quite well why, but it was a mild way of putting it to say that the relationship of those two was difficult.

Unfortunately, as the best friend of the problem-causing partner of said relationship, Sigurd was the one who had to listen to Hervey whine at him after something went wrong. He didn't mind being the one the other pirate came to for advice; it was just that sometimes Hervey's problems were pretty ridiculous. That, and actually giving advice was not exactly an easy task.

Tonight wasn't any different. Hervey ranted at him for a good while before Sigurd even managed to get two words in. "Have you-" he started, then raised his hand to signal Hervey to stop. The other man mumbled something Sigurd couldn't really hear, and he shook his head. "All right, listen for a second. How about you first go back there and apologize. Then you talk to him. And would you stop forgetting you're both male? Your sweet talk and suggestions that may or may not work on the ladies aren't going to cut it. Talk to him like you would to another man."

"How that's going to-" Hervey started to complain before suddenly looking all thoughful. He then ended up grinning. "Oh wait, I have an idea. Thanks, Sigurd, I knew I could trust you to help me with this!" He took off with that, leaving his fellow pirate standing there. Sigurd shrugged and headed off to the bar; having to deal with Hervey's relationship issues all the time were quite enough to make him want a drink.

He noticed Helmut sitting by the counter and nodded to him then took a seat next to the other man. "Them again?" Helmut asked before Sigurd had any chance to comment on the matter. The pirate smiled at that; Helmut actually read him surprisingly well. That, or he just knew what was going on.

Helmut offered a bottle of wine to the other man, and Sigurd took a glass and poured himself some wine. They then sat there for a long while, neither of them saying a word. It wasn't like any further explanation was needed, as Helmut knew well enough what these scenes Hervey liked to make were about.

The silence was interrupted by a couple of other members of the army stopping by to get themselves drinks. They continued to a table on the side of the bar, at least, leaving the two at the counter alone. Sigurd stared at his glass for a moment then took a sip.

"Sometime, I'm not sure if that relationship is worth the trouble," he finally said. "Of course, half the issues here come from the fact that Hervey is an idiot. I can't do much about that, that's for certain."

"Mmm." Helmut offered him more wine and filled his own glass while at it. There was another moment of silence, not that either of them found it awkward or bothersome. The two of them often sat like this. They didn't really talk all that much, but neither of them were the type of people who wanted to talk all the time, either. A glass of good wine and the company of someone who knew without words suited them better.

The wine bottle was emptied soon and they ordered another one. Another glass later, Sigurd smiled a little. "Then again, I rarely see Hervey this serious about anything. If it wasn't worth the trouble, he would've given up a long time ago. Don't you think?"

Helmut didn't reply, but he nodded his head a little and there was a hint of a smile on his face. He offered the wine bottle to the other man, and they then sat there in silence. More words weren't necessary; the two of them had their quiet understanding.

After emptying their glasses again, it took a while before either of them even moved. It was Helmut who made the first move this time; he placed his hand over Sigurd's, whether it was sympathetically or otherwise, anyone who might have been watching them couldn't tell. The other man turned to look at his companion though, and nodded just slightly. They both stood and headed out of the bar, with Helmut leading the way over to the pirates' quarters.

END.
