Light Mist

Part 3: Old Enemy

If William had been having problems with remembering the mission from a few years back before, that voice was something he couldn't forget, and he knew who it belonged to. The memory of the case of this vampire was clear in his mind all of a sudden. The mission had taken place about two and a half years ago, during the summer, and while William's role had been only keep an eye on Leon, who had been ordered to capture the vampire or kill if necessary, it hadn't gone too well.

For tracking down one vampire whose whereabouts were more or less known, the mission had taken more time than it should have. After several days Reinhold had gotten tired of being chased and left them a message. It was an obvious trap, but Leon had been confident in his abilities and there hadn't been any harm checking it out.

It was late at night when they had met Reinhold in the ruins of an old town. A fight had been inevitable of course, and eventually they had Reinhold cornered by the ruins of the town hall. Leon made the attempt to capture him but the vampire wasn't about to give up so easily.

The details of the battle escaped William's memory, but it had ended with Leon getting a direct shot at Reinhold and the vampire, probably thinking the older man was the easier target, had used Haste and went at him in an attempt to escape. That was when William had instinctively slashed his sword at the attacker, and suddenly he had found himself standing there, with the vampire's severed arm lying some distance away from him, and Reinhold screaming in pain. The vampire had managed to flee after that as Leon was out of bullets and the mission had ended in failure.

That was the past, and this was present. William closed his eyes for a second and took a deep breath then turned around. "Oh, right. So it is actually you then, Reinhold. Hello. It's been a while," he greeted, his voice strangely cheerful considering the circumstances. "So how has the hand been?" He added as he studied the vampire. "Looks like you've gotten a replacement for it as that sure isn't your original hand, anyway. You see, I remember Leon burned that one which is a shame really, I could've used it for some research but..."

"And you still talk too much, Father Wordsworth," Reinhold cut in, his voice annoyed. "You'll have to excuse me if I'm not in a mood to chat about the old times. I came only because your little friend here spread a rumor that you'd be here, and I just couldn't pass the opportunity to finish what I started back then. Hah... You won't be the first priest I've killed in any case but considering there are some personal feelings involved, I'll be glad add you to the kill count!"

The vampire's threatening talk was nothing William hadn't heard before, and he shrugged and shook his head. "I probably would. But before we get to the action, you should know I'm nothing more than the bait!" His gaze sought out Hugue for a second before he looked back at Reinhold and continued. "If not quite willing to be one I must add. My point is that your opponent tonight is right over there, so I'll be going now!" He grinned and backed away slowly while he kept his eyes on the vampire, fully expecting Reinhold to use Haste to get him.

As expected, Reinhold took a step forward no more than a second later, but by the time that second had passed, there was someone standing between the two of them. Hugue held up his sword, not drawn yet but his stance made it clear he was prepared for a fight.

"Hmm," Reinhold stopped at the end of the bridge and studied the cloaked figure. "So your little friend here is my opponent? This here doesn't look like the large idiot who was with you the last time in any case. What makes you think he'll make a difference though? Not like your big friend had been much of an opponent outside having a bad aim with his overly large gun."

William backed away for a few more steps then stopped. "It may make a difference, it may not," he said and nodded towards the swordsman. "But you see, good Father Hugue here wants to-" He was about to comment more on the matter, but his student chose that moment to interrupt.

"You don't need to know, vampire," Hugue said as he ran his fingers over the hilt of the sword. He glanced at his Master then looked at Reinhold with an arrogant glare. "You will die here tonight."

The comment was rewarded by laughter. "Really?" Reinhold asked with a smirk on his face. He took a step closer and appeared to be evaluating Hugue. "What an interesting guy," he said, amused. He shrugged and looked at William. "It's just too bad I have no interest in fighting you, pretty boy, it's him I'm after."

There was no change in Hugue's expression, and the swordsman simply stood there although he was still prepared to draw his sword on a second's notice. "Master already admitted he's the bait," Hugue pointed out. "You know this. Your only way to him is through me."

"Oh?" Reinhold gave a glance in William's direction then turned his eyes back to Hugue. "I see," he said and chuckled. "So that's how it is. Your Master, is he now." He raised a hand to his chin as he studied the swordsman some more curiously. "So what's your goal then, pretty boy? Are you here to perhaps try to finish what your teacher couldn't do back in the day?"

Behind the blond swordsman, William rolled his eyes. "Oh bloody hell. It seems you're way off with your ideas, Reinhold. Why would he do that? You're a wanted criminal, and Hugue is a one of AX's field operatives. While I don't always agree with his attitude about killing all vampires, you're not the type that leaves us too many choices now are you?" He paused for a moment and put his pipe away; while he wasn't done smoking, this was not the ideal time or place to be doing so. "Seriously," he added. "With the scene you're creating here, going on about wanting to kill me and all, I kind of wish Leon had..."

"Scene? Looks who's making a scene," the vampire retorted. "You're wasting your time, good Father Wordsworth. It's quite clear here your dear student wants to fight, and I still only came here to kill you. Why are we wasting time with words?"

Whilst the two were arguing, Hugue pulled his cloak off and dropped it onto the bridge. He stepped forward and stared at Reinhold with a challenging look in his eyes. "Fine then, vampire. Stop wasting time and come at me."

Reinhold chuckled at that. "There you go again, pretty boy. I must say, you're a simple one. Maybe you're trying to prove something to your dear teacher here? Fine, have it your way. If I have to kill you first, so be it!" He raised his right hand and a blade appeared in his hand.

At the other end of the bridge, the Professor grinned. "Now you're catching on! There's your opponent, so you two have fun fighting, I'll just be right over here somewhere." He stepped to the side of the path and hid by a couple of trees on the side of the bridge, hoping this gave Hugue enough space for the duel. It wasn't that he could not have taken part in the fight himself, but he knew his student better. Hugue was stubborn when he got it into his head that some vampire needed to die - that, and William wasn't too eager to go stand in front of someone who wanted him dead.

Hugue turned to look at the older man before locking his gaze on the vampire. With his Master out of the way there wasn't need to hold back on the vampire, and he drew his sword. "Come."

"I warn you, pretty priest, this won't be a gentlemanly duel," Reinhold replied. "I'll just kill you fast, and then you both die!" He laughed as he used his Haste skill, zooming towards Hugue at inhuman speed.
