Sleeping

By Elmina

There was sudden movement next to him, and Fereydoon opened his eyes. He shook his head a little to clear the drowsiness from his mind and then took a look at the room. There was nothing to be alarmed about, so he just turned to lay on his back and stared at the ceiling.

He felt tired, but ignored it for now. It just meant he hadn't slept that much yet. It didn't really make a difference, considering that he wouldn't be able to sleep properly while here anyway. His carefulness was of course caused by the other occupant of the bed; he couldn't allow himself to get off guard, especially now when they had made their move and someone might be after Volsung's life.

Volsung shifted around again, and Fereydoon glanced to the side before sitting up. "Are you awake, my liege?"

"Mmmh," Volsung mumbled and rolled over to face the other man. Fereydoon frowned slightly; Volsung didn't look too good. His hair was a mess, and his face looked somehow dark. It was not hard to guess he hadn't been sleeping at all, and Fereydoon cursed in his mind. Though he couldn't do anything about the other man looking so troubled, the rest was surely his fault.

There was a clock on the nightstand, and he picked it up and took a look at it. It was past midnight; he had managed to sleep for about an hour himself, then. Volsung had not, and he again cursed himself for being foolish. He had thought that the other man was asleep.

"Can't sleep?" He voiced his concern. He would have to apologize, but that would have to wait for a moment until he found out what was wrong.

Volsung shook his head. He looked at Fereydoon for a moment before closing his eyes. He then turned to lie on his stomach, and drew a pillow over his head.

Fereydoon sighed, quite annoyed with himself now. "Anything I can do, my liege? Shall I go get you some medicine?"

"No," Volsung muttered. "There is nothing to be worried about."

"Are you sure, my liege?"

"Yes, quite sure."

Fereydoon took a deep breath. "But," he then said. "There is something troubling you. If you can't sleep, then I feel it's my responsibility to find out the cause since I'm here." He gritted his teeth to keep himself from adding anything; it was probably not a good idea to start questioning his performance in bed right now.

There was a moment of silence, them Volsung mumbled something unclear and turned around again. He pushed the pillow to the side, and Fereydoon picked it up and moved it to where it had originally been. The other man seemed irritated, and he wondered if the last comment had been too much.

Suddenly, Volsung raised his head looked at him. "It has nothing to do with you. I know what you must be thinking, but it has nothing to do with you. I simply cannot sleep right now. It will pass soon enough."

"Yes, my liege," Fereydoon replied. He lay back down and closed his eyes. If Volsung said so, he would have to believe it. Though he still had his doubts about pretty much everything, he would believe what the other man had said. He had offered to help, and if there was nothing he could do...

Well, he could think of one thing, but it surely wasn't a good idea right now; not when he was sure his performance tonight had not been good. He then berated himself for thinking like that, after what the other man had said. It was a ridiculous though anyway; why would something like that keep Volsung awake?

He would just have to wait and make sure the other man would eventually sleep, then.

END.
